SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT FOILING YOUTH WORLD SERIES

A NEW EVENT CREATED BY FOILING WEEK™ DEDICATED TO YOUNG TALENTED SAILORS, PROVIDING THE FOILING PATHWAY TO BECOME PROFESSIONALS AND ACCESS ELITE SAILING IN COLLABORATION WITH THE BEST TEAMS AND YACHT CLUBS

Today at 09:30 (CET), Mr. Scott Over, Commercial Director of World Sailing, Ms. Li Li, Managing Director of China Sports & Communications International Co Ltd., Mr. Aaron Young the Commodore of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, Mr. Bruno Giuntoli, Operations Director of FOILING WEEK™ and Mr. Luca Rizzotti, Founder and President of FOILING WEEK™, met on live streaming to announce the guidelines of the FOILING YOUTH WORLD SERIES, a multi-class team championship created by FOILING WEEK™ and dedicated to the new foiling generations of the world. The announcement session was coordinated by sailing journalist and New York Times correspondent Chris Museler.

FYWS will be a team competition of foiling boats and will be dedicated to young sailors with the aim of training future professionals. The sailors will be part of teams representing the most influential sailing clubs competing for a world title. In 2023 the series will begin with 4 to 5 events which will take place in stunning locations around the globe.

FYWS will actively promote and support diversity and inclusion, sustainability and safety, all values for which FOILING WEEK™ is considered a benchmark. The new event will have a huge onshore program rich with initiatives. Guests and audiences will have the chance to try the boats, see technology exhibitions, as well as participate in conferences and use the latest virtual simulators.

The racing classes will be selected amongst: Moth, WASZP or FD SWITCH, Nacra 15, Wingfoil, Kite Foil IKA and Persico 69F.

Entries will be open to entities such as yacht clubs, sailing professional teams, MNAs (both as single entities and as group of entities). Each entry will include sailors in every sailing class represented for a total of 7 participants, between 16 and 24 years old, of which at least 50% must be women.

The series will pay particular attention to fundamental themes for the future of the sport. On one hand, young sailors will be able to train and access the best opportunities to then demonstrate their talent and skills professionally, on the other hand, the series will adopt fixed criteria in gender equity for all events from day one.

A list of 10 possible hosting locations is being explored, evaluated, and selected in North America, Europe, Middle East, China, New Zealand and Australia.

FOILING WEEK™ is one of the signatories of the World Sailing Special Events Sustainability Charter and is consequently committed to respect and promote the dictates of environmental sustainability and protection, gender equality, social commitment, transparency and to promptly and clearly report all the discrepancies found.

FOILING WEEK™ is running its 9th edition this week on Lake Garda in Italy and is the first and only global event dedicated to amazingly fast foiling boats, to their sailors, designers, and manufacturers. It is one amongst the only 8 Special Events nominated by World Sailing, which represent the pinnacle of the sport including the America’s Cup, SailGP, The Ocean Race, World Match Racing Tour, PWA World Tour, Star Sailors League and GKA Kite World Tour.

Efficient procedures and standards for safety to avoid accidents on the racecourse will be developed by FYWS organizers as well as specific foiling-oriented workshops on water safety to support ribs and coaches. Series data will be included in the ongoing scientific academic study on “injury prevention research in foiling”.

Massive attention will be given to all onshore activities. A masterclass program is being created and will include sessions on foiling basics and physics, boat building and repairs, and class specific “playbooks”, while workshops will focus on hands-on boat works, foiling boat set-up theory, splicing, set up and optimization.

FWYS is committed to leaving a legacy of inclusion and performance in sport at each event. A plan of locally based initiatives will continuously complement grassroots sailing through mentoring, data analysis coaching from events and training sessions, foiling specific physical training including injury avoidance, mental coaching, dietary planning and follow up.

The FYWS events will also have secondary, post-racing follow-up based upon the two weeks-long programs. With the meaningful goal of developing the local foiling scene, it will be possible to experience foiling trials and coaching for a week after the event. Boats from the fleet could even remain at the event location and be lent to local Yacht Clubs who prove commitment.

FOILING WEEK 2022 regattas begin tomorrow, June 30, and until Sunday, July 3, Fraglia Vela Malcesine will host more than 200 foilers from 21 nations around the world. For the first time in nine editions, the organizers found themselves forced to impose a maximum limit on entries, confirming the growing attention this kermesse continues to receive from flying boat enthusiasts around the world.

Absolute record number of participants divided this year into 5 classes: Moth, WASZP, ONEFLY, ETF26 and Wingfoil.

The Moth class, which has always been the queen of FOILING WEEK, registers more than 70 entries and excellent names such as Ruggero Tita, Nacra Gold Medalist at the Tokyo 2022 Olympics together with Caterina Banti. Britons Dylan Fletcher, Gold in the Men’s 49er class in Tokyo in 2020 and Paul Goodison, Laser Olympic Champion in 2008 in Beijing and Moth World Champion right here in Malcesine in 2017.

In the WASZP class, which was first introduced at FOILING WEEK in 2016, there are more than 60 athletes at the start.

Conceived for absolute speed and inspired by the multihulls of the 34th America’s Cup, there will be 8 ETF26 catamarans on the starting line this year, for the third time scheduled at FOILING WEEK.

More than 20 athletes are registered in the Wingfoil class, the booming new board trend that combines windsurfing, kitesurfing and foiling. You fly over the water dragged by a very light inflatable structure wing standing on a very compact foiling board.

During the week, the public in attendance will have the opportunity to test sail numerous foil classes following reservations.

As for the innovative SuMoth Challenge project, in its second edition, there are four boats submitted to the final stage by as many universities: PoliTo Sailing Team (Turin, Italy), Rafale ETS Montreal (Montreal, Canada), Soton SuMoth Team (Southampton, UK), PoliMi Sailing Team (Milan, Italy). An innovative academic year-long project involving the design, planning, engineering and production of a functioning, high-performance monohull foiler boat inspired by principles of sustainability and low construction costs.

Fourteen forums are scheduled from Thursday, June 30th to Saturday, July 2nd and moderated by New York Times sailing editor Chris J. Museler.

State-of-the-art foiling, academic design, innovation, sustainability, gender equality and disability will be addressed. Moments where it will be possible to listen, ask questions and meet with certain leading experts in these areas. Tonight at 7:30 p.m., there will be the awards ceremony of the Film Foiling Festival, a film festival dedicated to boats that fly that will be opened by the out-of-competition “premiere” of “FlyingNikka – The making of…,” by Roman director Pierpaolo Lanfrancotti, which traces the genesis of the first mini-maxi foiler for offshore racing by Italian owner and skipper Roberto Lacorte. The evening is reserved for FOILING WEEK participants. On Saturday, July 2, it will be possible to see Foiling Film Festival films with free admission (subject to availability), again at Palazzo dei Capitani in Malcesine.

FIRST EDITION OF FOILING FILM FESTIVAL, AWARDS CEREMONY ON JUNE 29

ON JUNE 29 IN MALCESINE THE WINNERS OF THE WORLD FILM FESTIVAL DEDICATED TO FOILING WILL BE AWARDED.
SPECIAL GUEST OUT OF COMPETITION: “FLYINGNIKKA – THE MAKING OF” PREMIERING AT FOILING WEEK.
16 WORKS SELECTED REPRESENTING SEVEN NATIONS.

There are 16 splendid finalists still in the running for a prize in this first edition of the Foiling Film Festival, the world film festival dedicated to films whose common thread is foiling.

The nominees compete in an “overall” classification for Best Film and in five category classifications as follows: short film (max 5min), editing, photography, screenplay, and series.
Over the past few months works have been coming in from all over the world to the Festival staff coordinated by its curator Beatrice Colombo Serri: “The idea of doing a Festival was born during a coffee with Luca Rizzotti (Founder and President FOILING WEEK), we were thinking of making a documentary on the history of foiling. Having previously worked for Banff and Ocean Film Festival the connection was virtually immediate and here we are in January looking for the best videos on flying water toys.”

The winners will be announced on Wednesday, June 29, at the end of an invitation-only evening to be held at the Palazzo dei Capitani in Malcesine. On July 2, the program will be replicated for the public by the City of Malcesine.

The evening of the 29th will be opened by the world premiere screening of the out-of-competition work “FlyingNikka – The making of…,” by Pierpaolo Lanfrancotti (Alessandro Smarrelli on editing), which shows the FlyingNikka project, from the genesis of the idea to the first unforgettable “flight” off the coast of Valencia, of the first “full foiling” yacht in the Mini Maxi class, designed for offshore racing. An innovative and revolutionary challenge strongly desired by its owner and skipper Roberto Lacorte.
The 49′ film by Lacorte’s team traces the most important moments of a challenge destined to leave its mark and open a new path in sports sailing. Unseen and spectacular images, interviews with the protagonists – Roberto Lacorte and team members. A full immersion full of passion and love for sailing accompanied by original music composed by Manfredi D’Antoni and Danilo Sentini.
At the end of the screening Roberto Lacorte and some members of the team will be on hand to answer questions from guests.

2021 FOILING WEEK Malcesine

Una raffica di iniziative all’insegna dell’impegno sociale.

Manca esattamente una settimana all’inizio della FOILING WEEK 2021 di Malcesine; dopo un anno difficile senza molta vela, siamo entusiasti di ritornare finalmente in acqua a volare. Giunta alla sua 12a edizione, dal 1 al 4 luglio la FOILING WEEK è qui per fornirvi tutto quel foil che stavate aspettando nella cornice splendida del Lago di Garda, con forum, trial e soprattutto regate, con la partecipazione di alcuni dei più grandi nomi nel mondo della vela.

Innanzitutto avrete notato che il nostro logo quest’anno è decisamente più colorato; sosteniamo pienamente la comunità LGBTQ+ e li supportiamo nella loro battaglia contro la disuguaglianza e l’intolleranza. Per questo motivo abbiamo deciso di colorare il nostro logo in modo che il nostro supporto non solo si possa sentire, ma anche vedere.

RACING
Le regate, supportate dal nostro fantastico partner Sailmon Instruments (https://sailmon.com/), vedranno coinvolte 4 classi: Moth, Waszp, ETF 26 e Wingfoil con l’Euro Cup. Tutte le prove prenderanno il via nel pomeriggio di giovedì 1 luglio.

Le regate Moth, pienamente supportate dalla nostra partnership con Liberty Bitcoin Fund (https://www.libertybitcoinfund.com/), vedranno partecipare alcuni dei migliori velisti al mondo, con atleti del calibro di Tom Slingsby, Ian Jensen, Paul” Goody” Goodison, Checco Bruni e tanti altri.

I Waszp vedranno molti giovani sia uomini che donne mettere alla prova le loro abilità l’uno contro l’altro, in un luogo con condizioni senza eguali. Ogni giorno, in collaborazione con il Magenta Project (https://themagentaproject.org/), sarà tenuto un briefing e debriefing per tutte le donne in regata; a presenziarlo saranno Liv Mackay della Nuova Zelanda, Margherita Porro dell’Italia e Franziska Mage della Germania, tutte giovani e talentuose veliste, con l’obiettivo di fornire quante più conoscenze possibili a tutti i partecipanti.

Dopo il successo dello scorso anno tornano le regate di wing foil, spettacolari come sempre, e per la seconda volta avremo il catamarano ETF 26, ideato dal quattro volte vincitore della Jacques Vabre Race, Jean-Pierre Dick, e disegnato da Guillaume Verdier, l’architetto navale di Emirates Team New Zealand, barca vincitrice della 34a edizione dell’America’s Cup.

Per la prima volta, la Foiling SuMoth Challenge mostrerà i frutti della fase 2 della competizione con un test di velocità sull’acqua in cui le squadre di studenti metteranno alla prova i loro concept di Sustainable Moth contro il GPS.

FORUM
Come ogni anno i nostri forum, promossi da Gurit (https://www.gurit.com/), in collaborazione con Persico Marine (https://www.persicomarine.com/), sono qui per portarvi le ultime notizie sul mondo del foiling e sul mondo della vela in generale, con ospiti d’eccezione da tutto il mondo.

Diamo il via il 1° luglio con “Volare oltre le barriere: sventare per l’equità di genere negli sport acquatici professionisti?” con ospiti che includono Jimmy Spithill, Daniela Moros e Liv Mackay, seguito a breve da “IMOCA Future: Too Far, Too Fast, What is too much risk for the human Pilot?” Con Sam Manuard e Antoine Mermod come speaker chiave. La SuMoth Challenge, in collaborazione con 11th Hour Racing (https://11thhourracing.org/), vivrà le sue fasi finali qui alla Foiling Week con un forum dedicato alla sostenibilità e all’innovazione; saranno presenti tutte le università partecipanti: Politecnico di Torino Sailing Team, Politecnico di Milano Sailing Team, Università di Pavia Sailing e Rafale ETS di Montreal per citarne alcune, oltre a Sergio Caramel, project manager per l’EcoFoiler presso NothernLights Composites ed ex Studente della Foiling SuMoth Challenge.

La seconda giornata di talk vede una scaletta costellata di stelle al mattino, con i commodori del Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron e del Royal Yacht Squadron che partecipano a “Managing the Biggest Foiling World Event: The Cup Rulers”, dove ci daranno un’anteprima esclusiva agli ultimi sviluppi dell’America’s Cup. Nel pomeriggio, grazie al supporto del nostro partner per la sostenibilità Torqeedo (https://www.torqeedo.com/en), “E-Foiling Match made in Heaven and the Future of ePropulsion” vedrà Nicholas Leason di Lift Foils, Gustav Hasselskorg di Candela Yachts (https://candela.com/), Luc Blecha di Zeest by Almatech e Massimo de Luca, vincitore della Foiling Week Multi-Purpose eFoiler design competition sponsorizzato da Torqeedo e Gurit. Poco dopo, Paul Larsen e Don Montague, leggende dello sport, parleranno del World Speed Sailing Record, essendo pionieri del foiling e del record stesso. Tornano le regate, il Gurit Forum e L’Expo & Trials, l’esposizione di barche volanti con prove in acqua. L’unica edizione del 2020 di Foiling Week omaggia Chico Forti, la sua famiglia e le organizzazioni degli amici che seguono il suo incredibile caso.

#Sail4Chico è l’hashtag che associamo alla Foiling Week 2020.
Enrico “Chico” Forti, è un ex campione di windsurf, recluso in un carcere della Florida da più di vent’anni. Il 15 giugno 2000, Chico è stato condannato all’ergastolo per un delitto per il quale si è sempre professato innocente. Per l’ordinamento giudiziario statunitense, oggi, ogni azione legale sembra definitivamente preclusa per cui si è dovuto ricorrere all’intervento dello Stato italiano per riportare Chico in Italia come detenuto. Foiling Week desidera dare un sostegno fattivo alla causa di Chico, per sollecitare l’intervento del governo in tempi brevi, poiché la resistenza di Chico è ormai allo stremo ed ogni giorno è sempre più tremendo.
La nostra azione per Chico è di solidarietà e testimonianza. Chiederemo a chi interverrà a Malcesine come ad Arco ed a tutti i velisti che vorranno aderire in quei giorni, ovunque siano, di testimoniare la propria adesione alla causa facendosi una foto con le mani che indicano il simbolo “4C”(4 Chico) e condividerla sui propri social con l’hashtag #sail4chico

La necessità di aumentare gli spazi per la Foiling Week era originariamente dovuta alle necessità logistiche di un evento sempre in crescita ( più di 200 barche nel 2019 ): torna utile ora, dove a fronte di un anno con numeri certamente minori, gli spazi più grandi permetteranno ulteriore distanziamento.

Foiling Week Regatta (17 – 20 settembre)
Alla Fraglia Vela Malcesine si terranno la MAX Moth Regatta in partnership Sailmon, le regate Waszp e Persico 69f. Al Circolo Vela Arco le regate dei multiscafi e presso Kite Club Malcesine la base dei Wing Foil che disputeranno il primo Campionato Italiano Wing Foil Tour.

La Classe Waszp, grazie ad una collaborazione di Foiling Week con SAILGP, vedrà i vincitori ricevere biglietti per una tappa Europea 2021 e la possibilità di visitare le basi dei team.

Una delle classi più attese sarà certamente il rivoluzionario circuito dei Persico 69F. Giorgio Benussi, COO di 69F Sailing ha dichiarato “Siamo orgogliosi di vedere compiuto un percorso iniziato due anni fa presentando il progetto al forum della Foiling Week, essere nominati come miglior progetto agli Awards l’anno scorso ed infine impegnati a regatare con una flotta di barche quest’anno”

Elia Rossetti, organizzatore del Wing Foil Tour ci dice entusiasta: “Il Wing Foil Tour sbarca a Malcesine, un appuntamento imperdibile per tutti gli appassionati”

Sempre a Malcesine in collaborazione con World Match Racing Tour si terrà un match race dimostrativo per ragazzi con i 10 Piedi Pocket Foiler. Il vincitore sarà poi ospite a bordo di un Persico 69F per portare la propria esperienza foiling al massimo livello.

I Flying Phantom, gli S9 ed altri catamarani singoli avranno base al Circolo Vela Arco che ne organizza anche le regate.

Gurit Forum (17 – 19 settembre)
Sarà possibile seguire il Gurit Forum in diretta streaming sui canali Facebook e YouTube di Foiling Week. Presto verrà comunicato il calendario degli interventi che saranno moderati da Chris Museler, Andrew Pindar e Bruno Giuntoli

Expo & Trials (17 – 20 settembre)
Foiling Expo è un’esposizione di barche ed attrezzature. BeFoil, 10’ Pocket Foiler, Waszp e Candela powered by Torqeedo saranno in mostra lungo la riva della Fraglia Vela Malcesine con i loro designer e rivenditori a disposizione per informazioni e dettagli.

Insieme a Foiling Expo, i Foiling Boat Trials ti permetteranno di provare le barche foiling esposte: è aperto a tutti i velisti che vogliono entrare nella vela 3.0. Ogni barca sarà seguita da vicino da un gommone con un istruttore che guiderà l’esperienza e garantirà la sicurezza.

Learn to Fly e Foil Tasting (17 – 20 settembre)
Vieni a fare il tuo “Primo Volo”. Sei un velista e vuoi provare il foiling? Foil Tasting è il battesimo del volo, 20 Minuti su un Waszp con coach dedicato di Europa Sail, distributore italiano di Waszp.

Vuoi un’esperienza completa che ti metta in condizione di “volare” sin dalla prossima uscita? Learn to Fly è un corso di 90 minuti, avrai l’opportunità di provare il foiling con allenatori professionisti e diversi tipi di barca. In collaborazione con Andrew Simpson Water Sports Center. I foiler disponibili sono RS Aero foiling, foil windsurf e Laser foiling.

Foil Pumping Contest (17 – 18 settembre)
Tra le attività previste a Malcesine una gara di foil pumping. Su di una tavola foil senza vela ma con la sola forza delle gambe chiunque desideri può tentare di stabilire il miglior tempo di percorrenza del percorso lungo 100 metri che costeggia il pontile sud della Fraglia Vela Malcesine.

L’unica edizione del 2020 di Foiling Week omaggia Chico Forti, la sua famiglia e le organizzazioni degli amici che seguono il suo incredibile caso.

Chico FortiCi racconta brevemente la storia Gianni Forti, lo zio di Chico:

Per chi non la conoscesse ancora, raccontiamo brevemente la sua storia. Il 15 giugno 2000, Chico è stato condannato all’ergastolo per un delitto per il quale si è sempre professato innocente.
La pena inflitta dal giudice, dopo un processo sommario, È stata quella di una condanna all’ergastolo senza sconti, da dove potrà uscire solo da morto. La sentenza ha lasciato esterrefatti quanti avevano seguito il dibattimento processuale, increduli che una giuria avesse potuto emettere “oltre ogni ragionevole dubbio” un verdetto di colpevolezza sulla base di flebili, confuse e fantasiose “prove circostanziali”.
Per dimostrare il grave errore giudiziario, sono stati presentati numerosi ricorsi a tutti i livelli nelle varie corti di appello della Florida, ma tutte le mozioni sono state respinte senza discussioni o motivazioni, nonostante fosse stata presentata una enorme documentazione di prove a sgravio.
Ogni azione legale sembra definitivamente preclusa, per cui si è dovuto ricorrere all’intervento dello Stato Italiano per riportare Chico in Italia come detenuto, dal momento che non c’è altra alternativa. L’autunno scorso, il Ministro agli esteri Luigi di Maio e il sottosegretario alla presidenza del consiglio Riccardo Fraccaro, hanno dichiarato ufficialmente di avere avviato un’azione diplomatica, ma non si conoscono i modi, i tempi e i nodi burocratici da superare. Il nostro evento è organizzato per dare un sostegno fattivo alla causa di Chico, per sollecitare anche da parte nostra l’intervento del governo in tempi brevi, poiché la resistenza di Chico è ormai allo stremo e ogni giorno è sempre più tremendo. Ricordiamo che all’epoca dei fatti, Chico – oggi sessantunenne – aveva tre figli, di uno, tre e cinque anni, che non ha più rivisto da quando è stato recluso.
Anche sua madre, oggi novantaduenne, ha finito le sue lacrime nell’attesa di poter riabbracciare suo figlio prima che sia troppo tardi. Enrico Forti ha sempre rigettato ogni forma di patteggiamento, forte della sua innocenza. E la dignità dimostrata in tutti questi anni di reclusione fa onore alla fierezza di essere italiano. Per questi motivi, la regata chiamata #sail4 Chico sarà dedicata lui, nella speranza che possa servire per dare anche il contributo della foiling community, affinché Chico possa tornare presto in Italia e vivere serenamente con la sua famiglia, i suoi amici e la sua gente quel che resta della sua vita ormai purtroppo rovinata per sempre.
