Happy 5th Anniversary to #TFW

by Tommaso Vitale

From June 28th to July 1st, at Fraglia Vela Malcesine, Lake Garda, Foiling Week will celebrate its fifth anniversary.

“The Foiling Week is the place where the foiling community meet and discuss. And sail and have fun” says loudly the Foiling Week’s mission statement, and in each location where the event was kept, this was proved. Fun time for everyone involved in this awesome event, staff and foiling regatta sailors indistinctly, where awesome activities are designed to touch every age range.

Garda
All the spotlights then must be directed towards the main event, the main course, the icing on the cake: Lake Garda. With this year’s event, Lake Garda first regatta turns 5 years old and all eyes are on it. By far the most appreciated place to foil, by many sailors defined also “the paradise” that everyone looks forward to, entries are now open since June 1st.

Since 2013, thanks Fraglia Vela Malcesine, Foiling Week found in this place a great support and participation that raised awareness in a way bigger than anybody could have expected: more than 100 boats, from 21 different countries, found their opportunity to test themselves and race each other in a marvelously windy place like this.

Foiling Week Regattas (June 28h to July 1st)
Within the event, few key elements will compose alongside. First off the FW Regatta: Moths, A-Class catamarans, Prototypes and a new class of boats will join the racing, the amazing 26 feet catamarans Easy to Fly will be at Foiling Week as part of their international circuit.

All classes will race on the one design race course, and then all together will race the FW Long Distance Race. This year the Long Distance Race will be run in two separate legs, the first in the morning from Fraglia Vela Malcesine to Campione in the opposite side of the lake, then, after a BBQ on the Campione Univela Club, the second leg back to Malcesine.

Gurit Forum (June 28th to 30th)
Another composing element of the event, concerns the Gurit Forum, that will be run in the morning and will touch topics like accessibility, safety and sustainability, dressed with discussions on latest AC designs and production boats. The forum will have again the presence of several AC designers such as Bobby Kleinschmidt from ETNZ , designer and manufacturers of new projects such as Alex Udin from Phantom International and Aurelio Proserpio with the new 10ft Pocket Foiler dinghy designed by Hugh Welburn, inventor of DSS.
Jean-Loup THIERS, SJet Project Leader of AIRBUS will show a presentation on electronic stability control.
University projects by École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and Isfahan University of Technology (IUT) will be presented by professors and students plus there will be the launch of 2 design competitions and Guillaume Verdier will present a fund-raising project.

Finally, in addition to the traditional Regattas and Forums above stated, FW provides a Foiling Boat Coaching by Paul Goodison and Andrew “Macca” Macpherson, Learn To Fly courses and free Foiling Boat Trials by Phantom International.

Foiling Boat Coaching (June 27th)
Paul “Goody” Goodison, three times Moth World Champion will coach a Moth clinic dedicated to beginners and intermediate level moth sailors. Boat rigging and set up, foil tack and gybes, all the questions you always wanted to ask.

Andrew “Macca” McPherson, Nacra Olimpic Coach will host a catamaran beginners-intermediate level clinic. Learn the secrets of boat rigging and set up, how to make your foiling cat faster and faster. Learn from the best!

Learn to Fly (June 28h to July 1st)
Have your “First Flight” RYA 90 minutes course with the opportunity to test sail with professional coaches all different sort of boat.

All the team at the Andrew Simpson Watersports Centre (ASWC), Lake Garda, are very excited to team up with Foiling Week from June 28 – July 1st. As a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) recognised training centre, we will be running foiling taster courses from the NEW RYA Foil Training Scheme throughout the four days of Foiling Week.

Alongside the Official Test Centre (OTC) we will be offering opportunities to try and Sailfoil or Windfoil. There will be a range of foiling kit available for both sailing and windsurfing, adults and children, and all tuition will be delivered by RYA qualified Foiling Instructors with RYA taster certificates issued to all those who participate.

The ASWC team looking forward to showing how accessible foiling can be, offering both sailors and windsurfers the opportunity to experience flying above the water along with the foiling community at Foiling Week later this month.

Free Foiling Boat Trials (June 28th to July 1st)
20 minutes test rides of the Flying Phantom Essentiel will be available after booking.

The Flying Phantom ESSENTIEL Is An 18’ Versatile Catamaran Easy To Use And Able To Fly In A Wide Range Of Conditions. The Foil Configuration Makes The Boat More User Friendly And Less Physically Demanding For The Crew. The FP ESSENTIEL Can Reach 20 Knots In 10 Knots Of Wind, With Top Speed Over 25 Knots.

With all this being said, Garda will represent continuity and innovation, following the past season’s events: Sydney and Miami.

Sydney
In the first Foiling Week’s edition in Sydney, hosted by the Woolhara Sailing Club between the 11th and the 14th of January, numbers were absolutely encouraging and, with the hope that next year this event will gather as many people as Lake Garda, a true paradise for the sailing lovers, did over the summer, a great amount of America’s Cup sailors and little talented kids showed up enthusiastically. Yes, kids… if they can, why would not everybody else. To develop and raise indeed a bigger awareness by these little talents, the Foiling Week, partnered with Harken, organizes trials and give them the opportunity to “be taken somewhere else” as one of our little athletes said. Different location, means different atmospheric conditions and so slightly different foiling crafts that may better adapt: A-Class, Moths, Flying Phantoms, SuperFoilers and Windfoils are some of the boats that flew around the water with big, red, eye-catching Slam sponsors on. Hard to go wrong.

Miami
If the level of the participants was already stunning in Sydney, the event in Miami, hosted by Shake-A-Leg from the 15th to the 18th of February, did not let the expectations down either; Paul Goodison, the British gold medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in the Laser class straight out of Sheffield; Christopher Ballin, Torqeedo’s Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder; and Greg Ketterman, top level boat designer, were just few of the many incredible personalities that FW was able to gather. It does not end here though. As well as the kids’ trails, FW, takes care of giving the opportunity to either outsiders, or also insiders, to learn more, or new interesting materials about the matter through the daily Forums, sponsored by Gurit, where innovative ideas for sustainable initiatives also applicable to the “outside” world take place: “but we need everyone’s support” as Christopher Ballin said.

Hence, with Garda’s event, the 2018 season kicks off

  • June 28th – July 1st Foiling Week Garda @ Fraglia Vela Malcesine, Garda, Italy
  • November 16th Foiling Week Award
  • December 13th – December 16th Foiling Week Sydney @ Woolhara Sailing Club
  • Febraury 21st –February 24th Foiling Week Miami

2018 Miami Foiling Week

The Hydrofoil Community Descends on Miamiby Chris Museler

It has been two years since Foiling Week, the epicenter of hydrofoil innovation, broke its own mold and held the first non-European event in Newport, RI. Designs first announced there are now full-production foilers and making history at professional sailing series around the planet.

And Foiling Week and its Gurit Forum of round-table topical explorations has become even more globalized, with last month’s Sydney Foiling Week. There the leaders in the hydrofoil space, including America’s Cup-winning skipper Glenn Ashby, shared with the world their innovative and collaborative spirit.

This week in Miami, thirteen speakers, including sailors (two-time Moth World Champion Paul Goodison), designers (Nacra 17 designer Pete Melvin) and builders (Fast Forward Carbon’s Tommy Gonzales), will represent latest in foiling developments.

The fantastic waterfront facilities of Shake-A-Leg along the pristine waters of Biscayne Bay will play host to both the forum and what every participant looks forward to: the demonstrations/trials, regatta and distance race. The on-water program will be second to none where every age and sailor-type gets to explore, test and share the excitement of foiling above the water.

And as Foiling week grows, so does its international community that is working to expand hydrofoil innovation into new realms where it can better lives and improve efficiencies in sport and transportation.

Foiling requires stakeholders to meet and discuss innovation and hot topics,” said Luca Rizzotti, founder of Foiling Week and Gurit Forum. “We have come so far since 2014 and it’s important that this community of highly intelligent people have a place to gather and share and collaborate.

Rizzotti said he is already seeing the fruit of the Forum’s efforts with safety initiatives being executed at international events, sustainability proposals shared across manufacturers and events, and accessibility issues for women, children and disabled sailors being addressed with new designs.

Community Based
Wherever Foiling Week goes, the local sailors, designers and builders come out in force. Like a Pied Piper, people come out of the woodwork to follow and take part in the event. This will be no different in Miami.

Miami is home of the US Sailing Team, and members of the foiling Olympic Nacra 17 squad will be floating in and out of Foiling Week. Also, visionary filmmaker Patrick Rynne, founder of the Waterlust Project, who explores the ocean through the lenses of lifestyle, environment, innovation and social responsibility, lives in Miami and will be visiting the Gurit Forum and trial events.

Even legendary innovator Greg Ketterman, inventor of the Ketterman Tri-Foiler in the 1990s, will be at the Forum to give perspective in how far foiling devekopments have come and some insight into the future.

Most importantly, anyone in the area is encouraged to come to Shake-A-Leg to share their own creations and even test them at the on-water trials. Or just come to try out foiling for the first time.

Like in Newport, America’s best are flying into Miami to share the projects that most excite them. David Clark, founder of Fulcrum Speedworks, will be offering demos on the production UFO foiler. And George Hradil of Delta Hydrofoil, a leader in the manufacturing of kite foils, will be sharing his findings as he pushes the design/build envelope.

There is also an international contingent coming to Miami. Louise Chevallier and Karl Blouin from Canada will be discussing the latest developments in the C-Class catamaran. And Sean Baldwin will share plans for Foil Baddeck 2019, a hydrofoil event in the Canadian Maritimes celebrating the innovations of Alexander Graham Bell.

Gurit Forum
The 2017 Gurit Forum in Lake Garda focused on the three tenants of Foiling Week: Safety, Sustainability and Accessibility. In Miami, the two-part Forum, a round-table, open and relaxed discussion with panelists and heavy audience participation, will dig deeper into the safety considerations in design and race formats. As boats fly faster, sailors must adapt and sometimes the learning curve becomes dangerous.

In addition to safety, the second forum topic will be about the branding of foiling. Like an new and growing space, today’s innovators, sailors, designers and builders, have a disproportionately high influence on how this segment of the sport is presented and perceived in the world. This discussion will explore how much control we have over the development of foiling from a community perspective.

Few days to the first 2018 Foiling Week in Sydney

From January 11th to 14th at Woollahra Sailing Club in Rose Bay, Sydney, a new year of foiling will be celebrated by the first Foiling Week of the 2018. It is the first down-under Foiling Week, in the homeland of the recent foiling renaissance.

As for all Foiling Week events, the program is enriched with an Expo, Trial & Experience Camp. In addition to the usual morning Forum program and the afternoon races, major foiling boat manufacturers will show and demonstrate their creations throughout the day.

A Class, Moth, Waszp and other new foiling boats like the Superfoiler will have class racing in the harbor during the afternoon. Thanks to Marlow and SLAM, there will be a long distance race for all the foiling boats, in an all against all showdown, to determine the fastest boat and the best foiling sailors on Sydney Harbour. The support of Marlow Ropes will provide the availability of three racing areas and organization for the first foiling year event.

The Gurit Forum will allow participants to meet the most advanced Australian designers, boat builders and sailors, sharing their experiences, ideas and future paths. Starting on the morning of Friday 12th, people like Andrew McDougall, Charles Viviani, Rob Denney, Jack McCartney, Ian Ward, Brett Ellis, Brett Goodall, James Brewer and others will present the latest development in foiling industry.
The forum is open to the public and the entry is free providing you register at:
https://old.foilingweek.com/sydney-2018/

Sustainability is one of the Foiling Week’s core values, provising a conscious way of dealing with the sport of sailing which is ecological by its very nature.
There are habits of life that even sailors tend to underestimate. Avoiding waste by not using plastic bottles, conscious use of fresh water to wash boats and equipment and differentiating waste products are just some of the actions being introduced to improve life on our planet whilst participating in our favorite sport. With this theme the Foiling Week partner Torqeedo extends the opportunity to reduce pollution and carbon footprint by using electric engines on support media and guests boats at Foiling Week events.

Foiling Week Harken Kidz Trials
On the first two days of the event, the first-ever Foiling Week Harken Kidz Trials will be held. Expert coaching and access to top-of-the-line equipment provides you with a fantastic opportunity to learn the art of foiling from the best out there – And it’s free! Get your application in today!

Here’s how it Works
• Kids aged 13 – 21 apply to participate in the Harken Kidz Trials.
